Abstract
Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare the incidence of back pain in international women lacrosse players with that of the general population. The aim was also to identify potential back pain predictors and attribute statistical significance to each.Design: A survey was designed and distributed to 160 international women lacrosse players from Australia, Canada, England, Scotland, USA and Wales. The survey used visual analogue scales as well as allowing for personal comment and factual information.
Results: Analysis of the results shows that international women lacrosse players have a higher incidence of back pain, by comparison, than the general population. The statistically significant predicting factors to the development of back pain in the last 12 months were found to be a previous history of back pain prior to this period and smoking. Other factors that were considered, but not found to be significant predictors of back pain in the last 12 months were stick type, age, length of playing career, total lacrosse training per week, total activity per week, amount of time spent training on hard surfaces, family history of back pain and playing position in the game. A survey of injuries other than back pain was also taken with the most common site being in the lower limb.
Conclusions: It is proposed that the sample population size used for the purposes of this study was insufficient to establish valid statistical predictors of low back pain in lacrosse players. Further research is necessary to establish whether the skills used in the game promote or decrease back health.
