- Abstract
- ABSTRACTThere has been minimal research into the physiological and long term effects of muscle energy techniques. Osteopaths today use a wide range of techniques in their treatment of spinal pain and peripheral pain conditions. One these techniques used is the muscle energy technique (MET). The aim of this study was the effect an MET has on the cutaneous blood flow (CBF) in healthy subjects. 12 subjects, all of similar body mass index, age and same gender were selected from BCOM. To measure the CBF a laser doppler probe was placed on the right cubital fossa at a place corresponding to the brachial artery. Pre and post MET measurements were recorded and compared. Results obtained were not considered significant as p>0.01. This was a vital finding as it showed that according to the study, MET does not have a significant effect on the CBF. As this is still an immensely effective technique and is widely used in osteopathic treatment, more research needs to be done as to why this is such an effective technique.
