Abstract
ABSTRACTFor any orthopaedic device to be considered useful in clinical practice it must be shown to be reliable. Reliability is the consistency or repeatability of measurements, and thus is the degree to which repeated measurements will agree between both inter-examiner and intra-examiner.
A study was carried out to investigate inter and intra-examiner reliability of the CROM device on cervical range of motion on ten normal subjects (for the inter study) and two normal subjects (for the intra study). Three fourth year students acted as the examiners.
Statistical analysis with the use of two-way ANOVA revealed that the results of inter-examiner study showed a significant difference between the examiners in left-lateral flexion, left-rotation, and right-rotation motions while no significant differences were found between the examiners in the flexion, extension and right-lateral flexion motions. In the intra-examiner study the results showed no significant differences between each examiners readings in subject one and subject two, except the right-rotation motion of subject two, which showed a significance difference in the examiners readings.
Therefore this study can confirm a moderate degree of repeatability in the inter-examiner study and a good degree of repeatability in the intra-examiner study, of the CROM device, as a tool in measuring the cervical range of motion as used by the osteopathic students.
