Abstract
Introduction
This study was designed to assess the effect of either Soft Tissue Techniques (STT) or alternate hot and cold hydrotherapy on the biceps brachii muscle contraction. It was proposed that either STT or Hydrotherapy would enhance the physiological function of the biceps, producing a change in subsequent generation of muscle power.
Material and Methods
Fifteen subjects were tested using the CYBEX NORM isokinetic dynamometer with a single speed protocol (60 degrees.second"1). All subjects acted as their own controls and participated in random order in two interventions and one control: STT (effleurage, kneading and hacking) and Hydrotherapy (hot: 3 minutes duration and cold: 1 minute duration compresses applied alternately over the biceps muscle for a total of 12 minutes). The control assessment had no intervention but a similar 12 minute time interval elapsed before being re-tested. Peak Torque (Nm) was recorded before and after either intervention or no intervention.
Results
An ANOVA of the results showed that there was a significant (p<0.0003) difference between the three interventions. Tukeys Multiple Comparison Test showed a significant increase in Peak Torque (p<0.05) after both STT (mean = +9%) and hydrotherapy (mean = +9%). The control group showed a non-significant decrease in Peak Torque between first and second measurements (mean = -7%). Both STT and hydrotherapy interventions clearly overcame the fatigue effect exhibited in the control group and furthermore increased Peak Torque values. No effect of order was seen in the data.
Conclusions
The results indicate that STT and hydrotherapy equally affected the development of power by the biceps brachii allowing enhanced muscle function and supports the conclusions of previous work with hydrotherapy and biceps function.
