Abstract
Background- Although muscle energy techniques and soft tissue techniques are commonly used in clinic by osteopaths, there has been very little research done into the effectiveness of these treatments on calf muscle flexibility or strength.
Aim- To test the effectiveness of muscle energy techniques and soft tissue techniques on calf muscle strength and flexibility. If there is a significant increase in strength or flexibility to compare the effectiveness of the two techniques and the order in which they are applied.
Method- 30 asymptomatic subjects took part in this study (4 pilot, 6 controls and 20 under went soft tissue technique and a contract-relax-stretch muscle energy technique). 20 subjects were split into two groups of 10. One group had a soft tissue techniques carried out in the first week, and muscle energy technique carried out the second week. The second group of 10 subjects had the muscle energy technique carried out in the first week, and the soft tissue procedure carried out the second week. Measurements of the calf muscle flexibility (using a goniometer) and strength (using the Cybex II Dynanometer) were taken pre-treatment and post-treatment.
Results- The results showed a significant increase in both calf muscle flexibility (P<0.001) and calf muscle strength (P<0.01) after both procedures. There was no significant difference between the muscle energy technique and the soft tissue procedure (P>0.30) or in the order in which they were applied (P>1.0).
Conclusion- This study supports the application of soft tissue techniques and muscle energy techniques for the improvement of calf muscle strength and flexibility.
