Abstract
An ever increasing rise in neck and shoulder pain in the adult population, with regards to the factors associated with the aetiology of these afflictions emphasises the importance of addressing and incorporating numerous manual treatment modalities into the care of the patient. The need to assess the effectiveness of these different modalities and the need for the use of pain assessment tools in the clinical environment is now one of ever increasing importance. An investigation into the effect of a muscle energy technique on the pressure pain threshold of levator scapulae of 39 asymptomatic students studying for the BSc. (Hons) in Osteopathic Medicine at the British College of Naturopathy and Osteopathy was conducted. Aetiological findings revealed that 76.9% of the subjects were recorded as having an increase in pressure threshold, 20.5% were recorded as having a decrease and 2.6% were recorded as having no change. It was found that the mean PTM change lay in the range +0.204 kg/cm2 to +0.473 kg/cm2. This investigation discusses the importance of pain assessment within the osteopathic clinical environment and the need to establish the reliability and effectiveness of pain measurement instruments and manual therapy.
