Abstract
This study investigated the effect of osteopathic treatment in combination with specific core stabilization exercises on chronic low back pain. Twenty subjects with chronic low back pain were selected at the BCNO Clinic. The subjects were divided intocontrol and experimental group. Each group consisted of ten subjects. The experimental group received both osteopathic treatment and additional specific core stabilisation exercises and the control group received just standard osteopathic treatment. Each subject received weekly osteopathic treatment. The study was carried out over a period of eight weeks for each subject. The experimental group received verbal and written instructions of the specific core stabilization exercises to be carried out at home. Each subject was monitored for level of pain and disability at the onset of the study, at four weeks and again at eight weeks. Results obtained at the end of the eight weeks of the study showed there was no statistically significant differencein the level of pain (p<0.05) or disability (p<0.05) between the control and experimental group. However, within the experimental group, statistical analysis showed a statistically significant decrease (P<0.01) in the level of pain throughout the course of the eight weeks of the study, but no significant improvement in the level of disability. The control group showed a statistically significant improvement (p<0.01) in the level of disability, but no significant decrease in the level of pain over the course of the eight weeks. Results concluded that core stabilization exercises did not have a positive effect on subjects with chronic low back pain. This would indicate that the incorporation of core stabilization exercises into the osteopathic treatmentmodalities of chronic low back pain does not show any greater improvement in the level of pain and disability compared to pure osteopathic treatment. Without longer study trials it is not possible to conclude the long-term effect of core stabilization exercises on the level pain and disability.
