The effect of therapeutic hip arthroscopy on adductor/abductor strength, the level of pain and function outcomes in patients with femoroacetabular impingement
Abstract
ObjectiveThe objective of this prospective cohort study was to examine the efficacy of therapeutic hip arthroscopy on pain and function as well as isometric adductor and abductor muscle strength preoperatively and postoperatively. The null hypothesis was to test if muscle function was similar to the effect on pain and function. DesignA cohort of sixty-three patients treated with therapeutic hip arthroscopy for femoroacetabular impingement was assessed preoperatively and postoperatively at 2 weeks, 2 months and 6 months. Labral tears were treated with labral repair, resection and debridement through keyhole surgery. Pain was assessed using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). Function was assessed using the modified Harris Hip Score (mHHS) questionnaire. Isometric muscle strength of the hip adductors and abductors were measured using a dynamometer. ResultsAdduction and abduction strength both significantly improved at 2 months and 6 months after the operation compared to preoperatively. The same significance was found on the non-operated side (p
