- Background Adverse perinatal outcomes can have minor sequels on a woman’s life; however, they can also have the potential to affect negatively not only the woman, but her partner, infant, family and surrounding. The potential of a screening routine, standardised antenatal psychological, physiological and physical assessment, to identify perinatal outcomes thus possibly reducing associated morbidity and mortality, is very significant. Objective The objective was to review up to date research regarding the optimal predictive methods of delivery outcome in childbirth. Design A structured literature review of research of level of evidence (LOE) 1 to 3 following the hierarchy of research and level of clinical evidence proposed by Forrest & Miller (Bowen & Forrest 2017; Forrest et al. 2018) published between 2016 and 2019. Methods A systematic search of database ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, Library Search of the University of Greenwich, Cochrane Library, Mendeley between September and November 2019. Results were screened according to inclusion/exclusion criteria and study data was then extracted. Results 12 eligible studies were identified and reviewed: 7 cohort study (prospective and retrospective), 2 meta-analysis, 1 randomised clinical trial (RCT), 1 questionnaire, 1 systematic review. Discussion Classification and interpretation of findings were limited by heterogeneity in intervention, primary and secondary outcome measures and study design. Conclusion The results from this review have been inconclusive at establishing the optimal predictive methods of delivery outcome in childbirth, however it was found that woman can follow advices to help reduce associate morbidity and potentially mortality.
