- Abstract
- Background Tools for monitoring patient satisfaction in healthcare are being developed to improve satisfaction and consequently treatment outcome. Longer survey tools specific to osteopathy may be preferred by osteopathic patients due to a close patient-practitioner relationship nurtured by the patient centred care philosophy that is core to osteopathy. This is an area which is poorly researched. Objective Investigate whether there is a consensus amongst a sample of osteopathic patients in their preference of patient satisfaction survey type and their reasons for their preference Design Two cross-sectional, observational questionnaires. Methods Participation email invitations were distributed to 411 consenting ESO patients. The two questionnaires were completed by each participant. Participant baseline characteristics, survey process satisfaction for each survey, preferred questionnaire and reasons for preference were recorded. Statistically significant observed differences within and between the groups were analysed appropriately. The significance level was set at p=0.05, confidence interval 95% Results The questionnaires were both fully completed by 22 participants, giving a 5.35% response rate (n=411). Most participants preferred the general healthcare questionnaire to the osteopathy specific questionnaire (73%:27%, p=0.0330). The most common reasons for preferring a questionnaire were because it was: ‘shorter’ (68%, significant p=0.0005) and ‘more, varied and detailed’ (18%, not significant p=0.2231). Participants gave significantly higher satisfaction grades for general healthcare questionnaire (p=0.0018). No significant difference was found in participant baseline characteristics between the questionnaire preference groups. Discussion Direct comparisons of patient preference between these types of surveys have not been published in the literature. The most significant reasons for questionnaire preference were supported by the current literature, questionnaire length and question quality, or capacity to maintain participant interest. Increased response rates would produce a larger sample size to enhance the reliability and generalisability of this study. Conclusion Comparing osteopathic patient preference of questionnaire type would be better assessed using questionnaires of similar length, that have both been validated with the only variable being the question type relating to either osteopathic treatments or general healthcare.
