- Abstract
- ObjectiveTo compare the short-term effect of an ordinary clinic room environment condition A (no landscape picture) with an ‘enhanced’ clinic room environment condition B (landscape picture) on pain pressure threshold (PPT) and heart rate (HR). DesignTwenty two asymptomatic male subjects volunteered to participate in a randomised, single blinded cross over design study. Subjects were screened for suitability and randomly assigned to either clinic room A (no landscape picture) or clinic room B (landscape picture). All subjects were randomly assigned to both clinic room environments with a one-week wash out period in between. HR was monitored continuously throughout the intervention. PPT and self‐rated stress on a visual analogue scale (SVAS) were taken at baseline, before the stress test, after the stress test and after recovery. PPT was measured using a hand‐held algometer on the first dorsal interrosseus muscle of the non‐writing hand. A two‐way repeated measures ANOVA was conducted to determine PPT, HR and SVAS changes between groups and condition. Statistical significance was set at 0.05. ResultsThere was no statistical difference between condition A (no landscape picture) and condition B (landscape picture) in PPT (p=0.288), HR (p=0.901) or SVAS. Statistical difference was detected between time HR indicating that the stress test was effective (P <0.01). There was a trend towards a reduction in self‐rated stress (SVAS) in the clinic room with a landscape picture. ConclusionFurther research is required to identify which elements of the environment may contribute positively to the wellbeing of the patient in an osteopathic setting.
