- Abstract
- Background Infantile colic (IC) is defined as an infant paroxysmal crying and fussing for three consecutive hours, more than three days a week and for more than three weeks in otherwise healthy infants. Until the moment this review was done, there were still no guidelines in the UK with significant clinical relevance with positive outcome to deal with IC (NICE 2017). Objective This study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of MT and LR DSM 17938 in the management of IC by synthesise, critically appraise the collated literature and verify the quality of the included studies included. Furthermore, to consider these interventions to future clinical applicability in IC and the impact it may cause in parents’ quality of life. Design Structured literature review. Methods Four databases were reviewed for relevant studies published between 2012 and 2019, applying Boolean Logic. Search returns were filtered by the author and according to inclusion/exclusion criteria to reflect the research question. A total of 14 studies were eligible and summarised into tables to perform a quality methodological assessment using The Delphi List and SORT analysis. Study characteristics and outcomes was also extracted. Results Overall crying times decreased in both intervention groups. None of the studies presented ultimate scores across the scoring systems utilised, but a moderate overall quality was identified with a mode score of 2B and 8/9, respectively SORT and Delphi List, which coincided with a general moderate blinding and intention-to-treat analysis amongst the studies. Discussion Heterogeneity resulted in a limitation of data interpretation and analysis. Outcome measures were associated with increased risk of bias as well as reduced credibility of the outdated outcome measurement scale. Furthermore, interpretation of results was made difficult thanks to scarce clinical significance. Statistical significance was reported with a relative decrease in crying times. Conclusion The collated findings point towards relative positive results, however interpretation should be taken with caution due to the high heterogeneity, lack of reliability of measures and poor statistical reporting. In spite of that, a global improvement in the quality of the studies was observed compared with the landmark review of Dobson et al. (2012).
