- Abstract
- BackgroundIt has been suggested in previous research that there is a reduction in serum C-reactive protein (CRP) during a fast. However, there is currently no information regarding how fasting affects these CRP levels in saliva, which could potentially offer a non-invasive method for diagnosis of a myriad of health conditions, where CRP is known to increase. ObjectiveThis study aims to examine the effect of short water fasting on salivary C-reactive protein. Research Methods and ProceduresHealthy volunteers (n=14) age (18-25) were recruited for this repeated measure intervention pilot study. The volunteers followed a two-day water only fast. Fasting was defined as a total abstention from foods and liquids except water. All participants fasted in their own environments and completed the fast. An enzyme-linked immunoassay ELISA kit for C-reactive protein from Salimetrics was used to analyse the samples collected ten days prior to fasting and on the second day of the fast. ResultsThere was a small decrease in salivary CRP following a two-day water fast, however this decrease was found to be statistically insignificant (p=0.473). The mean pre-fast CRP value was 9244.291 pg/ml (SD=8917.163, n=14), whereas the mean post-fast CRP value was 7937.377 pg/ml (SD= 8619.772, n=14). No change in weight was observed (p=0.931) in all participants during the intervention (mean pre-fast weight 64.714 kg, post-fast 64.429 kg). ConclusionDue to the statistical insignificance, no conclusive determination can be made, therefore salivary CRP in saliva is not affected following a two-day water fast. Further research might consider extended periods of fasting in better-controlled environments.
