Abstract
The aim of this thesis is to investigate whether increased intraocular
pressure in primary chronic open-angle glaucoma can be reduced through
osteopathic treatment.
In order to investigate this topic a match-controlled study was performed
with 20 patients, who had to comply with the defined inclusion or
exclusion criteria. Depending on the date of registration the patients were
divided into two groups: an experimental group and a control group.
In all patients the primary parameter – intraocular pressure – was
measured and recorded in the first and the fifth week by means of
Goldmann applanation tonometry through an ophthalmologist. A
questionnaire was used to ask the experimental group for the secondary
parameters such as headaches, eye pain, neck pain or other symptoms,
visual performance and the use of medication including their side effects.
The patients of the experimental group underwent an osteopathic
examination in the second, third and fourth week and then received a
holistic osteopathic treatment which was matched with their individual
state. In the control group only intraocular pressure was measured.
The present study reveals that the treatment results with regard to the
primary parameter were slightly better in the experimental group than the
control group. With regard to the secondary parameters in the
experimental group the osteopathic treatment was very efficient.
