Outline/Problem Definition
In the last years one has noticed various efforts in Europe to incorporate complementary medicine in the national health care. In South Tyrol in autumn 2009 Osteopathy was officially incorporated in the services of the public health care system through a pilot project in the centre of complementary medicine at the hospital in Meran.
Research Question & Objective
It was the aim of this study to find out how many therapists and doctors of the Rehabilitation unit have an osteopathic training and how they integrate Osteopathy into their daily work within the public health care in South Tyrol.
Hypothesis
In the Rehabilitation departement of the public health care system in South Tyrol there are doctors and physiotherapists, who integrate Osteopathy in their daily work.

As surveys show, Osteopathy is well received by the public.
Relevance for Osteopathy
It shows the presence of Osteopathy within the public health care system in South Tyrol and also the way in which it is being integrated in the Rehabilitation departement.
Methodology
The survey on trained osteopaths was done by asking the head physicians and coordinators of the therapists in the Rehabilitation unit. The integration of Osteopathy in the public health care was ascertained through a survey given to the trained osteopaths themselves.
Results
There are 26 employees with an osteopathic training: 20 per cent of the doctors from the Rehabilitation department and 10 per cent of the physiotherapists. Of the 17 interviewees 16 use Osteopathy often in their everyday work, 16 are content with the treatment possibilities of Osteopathy and all are of the opinion that Osteopathy is an important service in the public health care system. 14 respondents combine Osteopathy with Physiotherapy. Osteopathy isn’t unanimously accepted in the public health care system.
Critical Reflection/Perspectives/Conclusions
There are trained osteopaths throughout the South Tyrolean health service, however, most of them work in the bigger central establishments. Osteopathy has been satisfactorily integrated in the public health care system. However, the resources which the training offers haven’t been fully utilised. Furthermore, not all interviewees use the visceral and craniosacral approach besides the structural one in their osteopathic treatments.
