Outline/Problem Definition
Can osteopaths truly achieve measurable physiological changes by specific visceral techniques (mobilisation of the lesser omentum)?
Research Question & Objective
It was the aim of this study to examine physiological changes by a visceral osteopathic intervention. In special: Does a mobilisation of the lesser omentum influence the capacity of the portal vein?
Hypothesis
The null hypothesis underlying this study is:
A mobilisation of the lesser omentum has no
influence on the blood flow in the portal vein.
Additionally, no physiological alterations can be achieved.
Relevance for the Patients
As osteopaths also work on visceral structures (beside parietal and craniosacral elements), the question arises if a basis can be offered for this acting. In this basic research in fundamental science questions are dealt with such as 'in which direction' and 'to what extent' can changes of physiology be brought about and does osteopathic intervention change anything at all.
Relevance for Osteopathy
Being viscerally osteopathically active means to work actively in the abdominal cavity often not knowing if one is physiologically effective at all.
The subject of this study is the question if a specific visceral mobilisation of the lesser omentum leads to physiological changes.
Methodology
Twenty healthy male adults (age 23-40) were assigned to two equivalent groups. Groups were matched by age, body height and body weight. Inclusion criteria were a BMI - presented at
