Abstract
In this study it is examined whether the healing of a fresh Achilles tendon rupture with functional (non-surgical) aftertreatment can be measurably accelerated by means of osteopathy.
A doctor carries out two sonographic examinations on every patient (see appendix - medical
fmdings sheet).
Within the test group defined BMT/BLT and energy techniques are applied directly in the injured
area during the three weeks (proliferative stage) between the sonographic examinations. The control group is not treated osteopathically.
Defined measurements are carried out by the therapist before every treatment (six times within test group) respectively before every check (three times within control group) (see appendixtherapeutic findings sheet). These examinations are geared to the functional treatment concept developed by Thermann (1996).
Afterwards the gathered data is evaluated statistically. In respect of the definition of a potential
healing success two values emerge to be meaningful.
For one thing the change in the tendon structure which is marginal below the statistical level of
significance (p=O.055). That means an 'accelerated" adjustment of the newly built collagenous
fibres by use of the treatment within the test group.
If you compare the results of the Thompson-test (subjective test) you will remark a significant
difference. This probably means that a 'faster" stabilisation of the new tendon tissue is achieved by using the treatment within the test group.
The differences between the other measurements are not significant if you compare the two groups with each other. But if you take a closer look, you will see a tendential improvement within the test group in most cases.
