Target: Target of the study is the question of whether osteopathic treatments can
positively influence intraocular hypertension
Study design: Experimental study with within subject design
Patients and methods: Thirteen patients fulfilling the inclusion criteria were
included in the study. The average of three measurements in retrospect was taken as
an initial basic value. The prospective measurements were carried out 48 hours, 4-5
and 8-9 weeks after the last treatment, at the same time of the day.
The patients received three treatments at intervals of one week. The treatment
methods were not only techniques possibly influencing the ocular pressure but also
parietal and visceral techniques.
Targets: The primary target is the reduction of the increased intraocular pressure
and the secondary target is influencing the side effects such as headaches, neck and
eye pains.
Findings: Forty-eight hours and 4-5 weeks after the last treatment a clear tendency
showed that the osteopathic treatment has an impact on intraocular hypertension.
Four to five weeks afterwards, at the second reading, the pressure values were lower
again and after 8-9 weeks the average values nearly approached the initial value. As
to side effects, a slight but not significant improvement could be achieved.
The average age was 53.8 years and the distribution to gender was 11 female and 2
male participants. The most frequent anamnesis diseases were thyroid diseases,
heart diseases and diabetes. In patients suffering from thyroid diseases the ocular
pressure values were better to influence than in the other patients.
Resume: Summarising, it can be stated that the osteopathic treatments have an
impact on intraocular hypertension for a certain period of time. Through this the
therapy of conventional medicine could be assisted and limited.
It would be desirable to conduct a study in cooperation with a university hospital
with a large number of patients with a control group covering a longer period of
