Hintergrund: Im Zuge der osteopathischen Ausbildung
werden Techniken am Ganglion stellatum vermittelt. In der Literatur finden sich
jedoch keine Studien, die die Veränderungen und Auswirkungen einer
osteopathischen Technik am Ganglion stellatum auf das autonome Nervensystem
beschreiben.
Ziele: Das Ziel dieser Studie ist es, zu untersuchen, ob eine osteopathische Technik
am Ganglion stellatum nach J.P. Barral das autonome Nervensystem beeinflusst
und ob es zu messbaren Veränderungen der Herz- und Atemfrequenz bei einer
Behandlung im Vergleich zu einer Placebobehandlung am Ganglion kommt.
Design: experimentelle, randomisiert kontrollierte,
zweifach verblindete Grundlagenforschungsstudie
Methoden: An der Studie nahmen 38 gesunde Probanden
(11 männliche, 27 weibliche) im Alter zwischen 18 und 30 Jahren teil. Diese
wurden randomisiert auf zwei gleich große Gruppen aufgeteilt: einer
Interventionsgruppe mit einer osteopathischen Technik am Ganglion stellatum
nach J.P. Barral sowie einer Kontrollgruppe mit Placebobehandlung. Alle
teilnehmenden Personen erhielten eine einmalige Intervention in Rückenlage. Als
primäre Zielparameter wurden die Herz- und Atemfrequenz gemessen.
Ergebnisse: Für die
Messparameter zeigten sich in der Varianzanalyse (Signifikanzniveau 5%) keine
statistisch signifikanten Unterschiede zwischen den Interventionen.
Schlussfolgerung: Eine osteopathische Technik am Ganglion stellatum
zeigte keine signifikanten Veränderungen am autonomen Nervensystem gemessen an
Herz- und Atemfrequenz an gesunden Probanden im Vergleich zu einer Placebobehandlung.
Zusätzliche Studien sind
erforderlich um die Effekte einer osteopathischen Technik am Ganglion stellatum
und deren Auswirkung auf das autonome Nervensystem zu untersuchen.

Abstract
Does an osteopathic technique on the stellate
ganglion have an influence on the autonomic nervous system measured on heart
rate and respiratory rate in healthy subjects?
Background: In osteopathic school, treatment techniques for
the stellate ganglion are taught. However, there are no scientific studies
which show the effects of an osteopathic technique on the stellate ganglion and
its impact on the autonomic nervous system.
Aims: The aim of this study is to investigate if a
specific technique by J.P. Barral applied on the stellate ganglion influences
the autonomic nervous system in terms of measurable changes in heart and
respiratory rate in healthy subjects compared with the data of equally healthy subjects
who received a placebo-treatment.
Design: experimental, randomized controlled,
double-blinded basic research study
Methods: In this study 38 healthy subjects (11 male, 27
female) aged 18 to 30 years participated. They were randomly assigned to two
equally sized groups, an intervention group with an osteopathic technique by
J.P. Barral on the stellate ganglion and a control group with a sham treatment.
All participants received one intervention in supine position. As measurement
parameters heart rate and respiratory rate were chosen. Changes in those
parameters due to the intervention were evaluated.
Results: Concerning the parameters chosen for the study the
repeated-measures analysis of variance showed no statistically significant
effects (significance level 5%) comparing the osteopathic and the sham
treatment.
Conclusion: An osteopathic technique on the stellate ganglion
showed no significant impact on the autonomic nervous system as far as heart
rate and respiratory rate are concerned. Additional research is required to
evaluate the effects of an osteopathic technique performed on the stellate
ganglion affecting the autonomic nervous system.
