Abstract
Background: Understanding patient perceptions and expectations of healthcare is becoming increasingly important for ensuring patient satisfaction and the delivery of high quality care. There is limited research regarding the influence of patient characteristics on their perceptions and expectations of osteopathic treatment. Objective: The objective was to investigate patients’ perceptions of osteopathic treatment at the European School of Osteopathy (ESO) clinic and their expectations of student practitioners. The objective was to also investigate whether patients’ perceptions and expectations were influenced by their characteristics. Design: Cross-sectional questionnaire investigating patient characteristics and their expectations and perceptions of osteopathic treatment. Method: The Generic Short Patient Experience Questionnaire (GS-PEQ) was used and distributed randomly to patients by either tablet form or via email over a three-month data collection period. Patients were required to be over the age of 18 years and currently receiving treatment at the ESO clinic. The main outcome measure assessed was the GS-PEQ. Data was statistically analysed using the Fisher Exact test and Chi Square test as appropriate. Results: The response rate of the patients approached to complete the questionnaire was 94.4%. Results showed most patients to have good perceptions of osteopathic treatment, however there were issues highlighted around shared decision making and lack of sufficient information about their presenting complaint. When comparing patient characteristics with their perceptions, a statistically significant association was found between age and perception of how well the practitioner communicated with the patient (p=0.00085). Results also showed that patients expect ‘confidence’, ‘friendliness’ and ‘empathy’ from the practitioner. Discussion: The most significant results support the current literature, suggesting patient age to be an important factor in influencing patient perceptions and expectations. For more significant results and to enhance the reliability and generalisability of this study, a larger sample size would be needed. Conclusion: The global hypothesis “There is a relationship between patient characteristics and their perceptions of osteopathic treatment and expectation of student practitioners” can neither be accepted nor rejected. This study provides an understanding of patient’s expectations and perceptions of osteopathic treatment, which will aid practitioners in providing the best care for optimal patient satisfaction.
