- Background: Masters Swimming aim is to promote healthy exercise (Rubin, 2010). Shoulder injuries account for 90% of swimming injuries (Weldon and Richardson, 2001), with limited studies of injuries across the swimming community (Walker et al., 2017), and limited research into the experiences and attitudes of master swimmers to the use of manual therapy. Objectives: To examine what influences Master Swimmers in their choice of manual therapy treatment. To examine if there are specific therapies recommended and what these recommendations are based on. To critically explore the experiences and attitudes of masters swimmers who have used manual therapy. Design: This is a qualitative method research project with the participants being ASA registered Masters swimmers either training as individuals or training within ASA affiliated swimming clubs. Methods: This is a qualitative method research project. Results: 9 semi-structured interviews were conducted, these were coded and four major themes emerged. Discussion: The aim of this study was to review the experiences and attitudes of maters swimmers using manual therapy for the treatment and management of swimming injuries. Throughout the research it was evident that there has been limited research into this area whether via manual therapy profession or by swimmlng community. Conclusion: Masters swimmers are proactive, often find therapist via recommendations from peer swimmers and/or coach. NGB coach education qualifications do not cover swimming injuries and there is limited signposting for both swimmers and coaches via their websites or joumals. Many masters swimmers in the England use private health care to access therapy to maintain their sport and physical activity, which may be a barrier.
