Abstract
Background: Previous studies have investigated the effect of mindfulness meditation on well being. The general consensus is that mindfulness meditation helps increase well being on many levels. This study compared the levels of stress , anxiety and depression in an osteopathic student population using a control and intervention group. Objective: The objective is to answer the research question : is there a difference of perceived stress / anxiety / depression level during the exam period between participants undergoing a short program of MM compared with a control group using a validated questionnaire. Design: Experimental study. Independent repeatn study design with questionnaire. Methods: 50 participants were selected but 45 participated in this experiment , using 29 female and 16 male student participants from the European School of Osteopathy (1st and 2nd year). Participants were semi-randomly allocated to either intervention or control group. Both groups had to complete stress e-questionnaires before and after intervention. The intervention group undertook a 10 days mindfulness meditation free program using the website «Headspace.com». The meditation program consisted of 10 sessions of 10 minutes. The control group did not undertake the mindfulness meditation program. At the end of the experiment results were analysed using a Chi squared test and Mann Whitney U. Results: There are statistically significant differences between control and intervention groups in terms of change based on the Mann-Whitney U and Chi2 tests using a significance level of 0.05 . Between the two groups the Chi2 test revealed a highly significant difference in change for Stress (p=0.020) , a significant difference for Anxiety (p=0.048) and almost a significant difference for Depression (p=6.051). The Mann-Whitney U test did not show a significant difference for Stress (p=0.609) but revealed a highly significant difference for Anxiety and Depression (respectively p=0.003 and p=0.009). Discussion: Statistically significant differences for stress, anxiety and depression were observed pre and post intervention which coincides with previous literature. The stengths and limitations of the present study are considered. Conclusion: Decreased perception of stress , anxiety and depression were recorded for the intervention group , indicating that a short program of MM affected positively the osteopathic student population during the pre-exam period, while an increased perception of the three variables were recorded for the control group.
