Abstract
Background: The effect of manual therapy upon humans is a topic of intense research. However, there is minimal towards its effects upon the equine population. Objective: To gauge the effect of osteopathic intervention upon hind leg elevation of an Arabian horse. Design: A single case study with an ABAB format lasting 12 consecutive weeks, with a 3 week baseline data collection phase. Method: Weekly video footage was taken of the horse being ridden by it's owner at rising trot. 8 tape markers were placed on the left side of the horse at pre-defined skeletal reference points, to enable more precise raw data gathering. The intervention consisted of a full hind leg articulation and stretching of the quadriceps and hamstring muscle groups of both hind legs. The video footage from the 12 weeks was transferred into Tracker software, where it was analysed for any change in hind leg elevation. Raw data was displayed in table and graphical format. To each graph, +/- 2D bands were implemented to determine if a statistically significant affect on HLE was attained. Results: Over the course of the 12 weeks, HLE increased short term, providing statistical results to indicate the effectiveness of osteopathic treatment for horses. Conclusion: A statistically significant increase in hind leg elevation occurred short term post osteopathic intervention. Further research is needed to determine the effects of manual therapy upon equine participants and to what extent optimised performance could be held long term within the world of equine competition.
