- Abstract
- Background The criteria by which patients choose their osteopath represent the first steps an individual takes in starting osteopathic testament. Very little research investigated this fundamental question. Apart from one mixed-study design study, no published qualitative research exists in the literature. Objective To investigate patients' experiences on their motivations to see an osteopath, methods to choose an osteopath and reasons for staying with an osteopath in participants treated in the UK Design Qualitative study using phenomenological approach. Methods Semi-structured in-depth interviews were used to gather; audio-recorded, transcribed and anonymised data. Data was analysed and interpreted using a thematic framework to develop major themes and subthemes. Triangulation and member-checking were completed; participants confirmed the transcripts and initial coding. Results Nine individuals were interviewed. The final data framework was formed of four major themes: initial processes in choosing an osteopath, importance of first impressions, motivations to continue treatment with an osteopath and qualities expected from an osteopath; and twenty.-seven subthemes. A final model emerged from the analysis showing the interrelationship of the different major themes. Discussion The results were discussed in the context of the wider literature as research, particularly in osteopathy, is lacking in this area. The main findings tend to agree when compared to studies in CAM practices. Conclusion "Word of mouth" was participant's main reason in choosing their osteopath, while the reason for seeking osteopathic treatment was mainly because of physical discomfort. This study also investigated why patients continued with osteopathic treatment; improvement was the primary criterion. Further research with bigger sample in these areas would be needed to generalise these factors. This may inform the GosC and osteopaths in the way they advertise themselves to the general population in the UK.
