- Abstract
- Background: Hypertension is one of the most common disorders globally and the major modifiable risk factor for a number of potentially fatal conditions Hypertension is a considerable cost burden to the NHS, social care services and the patients themselves, emphasizing the importance of management of this condition. The research showed scarce results with regards to osteopathic efficacy in hypertension management, therefore, there is a need for adjuvant methods which can complement osteopathic practice. Objective: The objective of this study was to explore the potential role of the Strelnikova breathing technique in the management of a patient with primary hypertension. Design: Single case study (ABAB) Methods: The patient enrolled In this study was a male with primary hypertension managing his elevated BP via life style modification. Four stages of the experiment were performed over a 6 week period with 14 total days of intervention (7 x 2) alternated with 24 total days without intervention (12 x 2). Outcome measures used included daily measurements of BP and the Who-5 Well-Being Questionnaire Index to assess psychological quality of life A statistical process control was performed for data interpretation. To visually represent study outcomes, graphic analysis was conducted. Results: The patient's psychological quality of life improved over the experiment period, exceeding the boundaries of the ±2SD. Measurements taken in the afternoon showed a general decrease in BP after the breathing exercise, however, these results were not statistically significant. BP taken in the morning and in the evening did not show any statistically significant reduction. Diastolic BP exceeded the boundaries of ±2SD during the first intervention phase Discussion: Due to methodological flaws such as inappropriate study design, inadequate duration of intervention period, and an insufficient range of outcome measures the results of this study were not statistically significant. Conclusion: The results of this study are not conclusive. Main findings did not demonstrate a statistically significant morning or evening BP reduction within the experimental period The effect of breathing exercises on the patient's psychological well-being is promising, however, more research is needed to eliminate possible carry-over effects or extraneous confounding factors.
