- Abstract
- Background: Otitis Media (OM) continues to be one of the most prevalent early childhood diseases OM is recognised by osteopaths as a treatable condition and osteopathic treatment appears to have potential long-term benefits as a complimentary therapy. Clinical efficacy has been demonstrated, but further research would undoubtedly be beneficial. Objective: To survey GOsC Registered Osteopaths (ROs) in order to determine views on their experience of treating OM and the benefits of osteopathic treatment. Design: A cross-sectional questionnaire to collect qualitative and quantitative data from ROs throughout the UK who agreed to participate in research studies. Method: The questionnaire was emailed to approximately 2,400 ROS The analytical approach utilised the Chi2 statistical test to explore the association between categorical variable. The Kruskall-Wallis test was used to explore the difference between specific groupings un the data and scored responses to ordinal questions. Results: The majority of the questions analysed showed the results are not significant. However, two questions showed the results were significant, both with a P-Value of <0.00011 Both questions were identical other than one focused on acute and the other chronic OM: _How many treatments, on average, do you find it takes to effectively treat children with acute/chronic Gtitis media compared to how long do the children take to recover from their first treatment, when suffering from acute/chronic otitis media?' Discussion: The study found Osteopathic Manipulative Therapy (OMT) appears to be an effective treatment for OM However, osteopaths were judging its effectiveness on their own practical experiences, which is subjective, rather than participating in a large blinded study. Results from the study were discussed and compared to previous research in the osteopathic field Further research is recommended with larger sample sizes and the use of a controlled-based methodology. Conclusion: A review of some of the wider literature suggests OMT can be used effectively as a complementary therapy for treating OM The results of this study appear to support this in that the majority Ros believed there are benefits of OMT on OM However, these findings are based on the subjective opinions expressed by ROS in response to the questionnaire, which questions their validity without further control-based studies.
