- Background: Within healthcare, the clear understanding of patient expectations is an important subject for legal, ethical and commercial reasons. Patient expectations about osteopathy are poorly researched. Only one study provided reliable profiles of patient expectations in osteopathic practice. Objective: The objective was to investigate the expectations of patients regarding osteopathic treatment at a teaching clinic and to see whether they were related to patient profile and presenting complaint(s). Design: Cross sectional questionnaire investigating patient profile and their expectations. Method: A paper version and an online version were either given or sent to adult patients of the ESQ teaching clinic. The questionnaire was created with Google Forms. The main outcome measures assessed were patient expectations regarding their practitioner, the treatments and its outcome. The data collected was statistically analysed, Chi-square and Kruskal-Wallis tests were run using analyse-it. Results: The response rate of the questionnaire was 26.62% for a total of 119 participants. Participants' responses were coded in order to obtain an order of importance of expectations investigated. Results showed that what patients expect the most is to be given an explanation of what the treatment will involve before treatment begins, and what they expect the least is to have the choice of the age range of their practitioner. Results also showed a statistically significant association between the patients' age range and their expectations (p-value 0.0017). Discussion: The main results support the current literature as it has been shown that patient's age range is an important factor regarding the formulation of patient expectations. Previous studies investigating patient expectations found a similar order of importance of expectations. Improvements could have made in the design of the questionnaire and in the sample size in order to gain more significant results. Conclusion: The global null hypothesis "There is no association between patient profile and presenting complaint(s) and their expectations about osteopathic treatment" can be neither accepted nor rejected. However the null sub hypothesis 2 can be rejected. Results also provide a clear order of importance of patient expectations toward osteopathic treatments. Further understanding of patient expectations has been achieved and the results of this study could help to improve osteopathic care in a teaching clinic.
