Abstract
Title The Effects of Stress on Hypertension and the application of the Eeman technique. Aims of research To determine if breathing intervention could promote a desired effect to reduce hypertension on an ethnic group with a more resistant type of hypertension.Method This study used an AB-AB approach with 2 case studies. The cases were followed for 20 days in total, with 10 total days of breathing intervention (2x5) interspersed with 10 days (2x5) without breathing intervention. Data gathering occurred throughout the 20 days in the participants’ own home. An incident diary was completed by the participants along with a stress diary which used a rating scale of 1-7 and based on the participants’ own perception of stress. Blood Pressure (BP) was also recorded twice daily. The technique is a controlled deep breathing method known as the Eeman technique and was used on the subjects’ breathing intervention days.RESULTS The female case study highlighted some interesting results such as a drop of 27mmHg systolic pressure and 11mmHg diastolic pressure in one day directly after applying the technique. An overall lower blood pressure was reported by the female participant however the male case study had less success, as BP control was erratic throughout the study. Neither of the Case Study results appeared to be statistically significant. Conclusion The study inferred that hypertension can be highly dependent on the participants’ perceived levels of stress. It also suggested that the Eeman technique can lower BP however maintaining the change of a lower blood pressure was unachievable in both these cases, possibly due to the too rapid AB-AB nature of the study. It is possible that the subjects needed a much longer time period with the intervention for their bodies to adapt to the changes encouraged by the technique. A longer duration of the study may have seen a statistically significant outcome.
