- Abstract
- Background: Mindfulness, coming from Buddhism, means being aware of inner and outer phenomena and not judging them. Mindfulness meditation has become increasingly popular in the scientific and clinical setting in the last three decades. This has been due, largely, to the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction program, developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn. Many studies have found that mindfulness meditation has beneficial effects on the physical and mental health. Objective: This review evaluates the recent studies, focusing on the effects of mindfulness meditation on chronic pain, experienced in the musculo-skeletal system; and examines if mindfulness meditation is applicable to osteopathy. Methodology: Numerous databases were searched via the University of Greenwich portal. Included were: full-text, peer-reviewed articles in English, published in the last five years. The methodologies were assessed using the SORT grading system. Results: The review found seven suitable articles. Statistically significant improvements were found on almost all studies. However, the methodologies, sample sizes and designs were not always adequate statistically. Conclusion: Further investigations and better designed studies into the effects of mindfulness meditation on chronic pain conditions are required before conclusions can be made. However, there is enough of indication, that mindfulness mediation has beneficial effects for the health. Thus, professionals and researchers in osteopathy should stay alert to new studies. Not only due to the growing evidence, but also, since looking at the roots and philosophies of osteopathy and mindfulness, many of correlations can be found.
