- Abstract
- Tai Chi is an exercise form for which there is an increasing interest when it comes to research. However, there are very few studies investigating its effect on flexibility. This study was a cross-sectional study, which compared passive ankle joint flexibility between 29 Tai Chi practitioners (test group) and 27 non-practitioners (control group). The mean age of the test group was 53.48 years (+/-19.06 years standard deviation) and the mean age of the control group was 53 67 years (+/-15.54 years standard deviation). The median level of practise among the Tai Chi practitioners was once per week for 1.5 hour, and the median duration of practise was 3 years. The study showed only significant difference for left ankle joint in inversion in favour for the Tai Chi group (21.11 degrees compared to 17.44 degrees). However, this difference was more likely to be due to reduced range of movement for inversion of the left ankle joint in the control group. For plantarflexion, dorsiflexion and eversion, there was no significant difference between the two groups. The conclusion is that Tai Chi practitioners at this level are not more flexible in their ankle joints than non-practitioners
