- Abstract
- The CV4 technique is indicated for a variety of conditions, which may relate to some of the components governing postural control. This pilot study tests the hypothesis that a CV4 can affect postural control. Methodology Using a randomised single-blind design, 30 subjects were divided equally (n=10) into test, control and sham groups, matched for age and sex. Postural sway was measured before and after a 5 min. intervention: CV4 for the test group, rest for the control, and a touch only for the sham. Results There was no significance between before/after sway readings, nor between the means of the three groups, therefore the null hypothesis could not be rejected. Power-analysis revealed a 68% chance of a type II error (1-/3=.32).Conclusion Despite the results being statistically inconclusive, they suggest a measurable improvement in postural sway for the test group that is distinguishable from that of the control and sham. This warrants further research, for which recommendations are offered, including appropriate methodology to ensure validity and generalisability.
