- Abstract
- Although limited, research evidence does exist to qualify a professional classical dancer's choice of manual therapy, however, the influencing factors behind this choice have failed to be considered. This qualitative study aims to explore and describe the dancers' motivations for choosing a particular type of manual therapy in the treatment of musculoskeletal injury..Method_ The study used a phenomenological methodology developed to understand this choice of manual therapy. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight professional classical dancers in a private setting at their company studios Results_ Musculoskeletal injury occurs within the context of a company healthcare system that fails to meet the total demands of the injured dancer. Exploration of off'-site manual therapy alternatives are hindered by: unawareness of suitable manual therapyalternatives; intense daily schedules; financial investment and the need for specialised care. Conversely, professional recommendation and the development of trust facilitate the determination of manual therapy/ therapist. Conclusion_ The influences behind choosing a manual therapy are multifactorial. A manual therapist's trustworthiness and expertise in specialist areas are important factors to a professional dancer when pursuing treatment. Improvements need to be made in the education of the dancers on the manual therapies suitable in injury rehabilitation. This will reduce behaviours of reliance and fear of the unknown and promote empowered, informed choice. Greater accessibility to off-site treatment at reduced cost is also advised, this will function to reduce the concerns of dancers in the non-reporting of injuries and not work against them.
